Apple Extends Chip Technology Deal with Arm Beyond 2040

Arm, in its IPO documents, reveals an extended chip technology deal with Apple that goes beyond 2040.

Arm, known for its computing architecture in smartphones, disclosed pricing details for its $52 billion IPO, set to be the largest in the U.S. this year. SoftBank Group, Arm’s owner, plans to offer 95.5 million American depository shares at $47 to $51 each.

Apple has a historical connection with Arm, having been one of its founding partners in 1990. They initially collaborated before Apple’s ‘Newton’ handheld computer, released in 1993, which utilized an Arm-based processor chip. Despite the Newton’s lackluster performance, Arm’s energy-efficient chip design later dominated mobile phone technology.

Apple, alongside other tech giants, invested $735 million in Arm’s recent IPO, with Reuters confirming Apple’s participation. The extended deal with Apple was not included in Arm’s previous IPO documents from August, suggesting it was finalized between then and September 5.

Arm has not provided further details, and Apple has yet to comment on the matter.
