Anantnag, June 3: The District Magistrate of Anantnag has ordered the immediate suspension of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) across the district for two months, citing cybersecurity concerns and potential misuse. The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), came into effect on May 7, 2025.

According to the directive, VPNs, which transmit encrypted data, mask IP addresses and bypass website blocks and firewalls, have been reported to facilitate unlawful activities, including inciting unrest and disseminating inflammatory material. Officials further stated that VPN usage could compromise sensitive information and pose significant risks of cyberattacks.

District Magistrate Anantnag, Fakhrudin Hamid has instructed the immediate suspension of all VPN services on mobile phones in the district. The Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag, has been tasked with ensuring strict implementation of the order.

Residents have been advised to refrain from using VPNs during this period to avoid legal consequences and support efforts to maintain public order and cybersecurity.
