NEW DELHI, Feb 18:  Union Home Minister Amit Shah assessed the progress of enforcing the new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir, accompanied by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Abdullah participated in the meeting even though law and order is directly managed by the Central government since the previous state was divided into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh in 2019.

In addition to Abdullah and Sinha, senior officials from the Central government and the Jammu and Kashmir government were present at the North Block meeting, officials stated.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam substituted the colonial period Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively.

The new regulations were implemented starting July 1 of the previous year.
