New Delhi, Feb 4: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday chaired a crucial high-level meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir following a spate of recent terrorist attacks, including the targeted killing of an ex-serviceman in Kulgam. The meeting brought together top officials from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and central paramilitary forces to assess the prevailing security landscape in the Union Territory and chalk out future strategies to counter terrorism.
The security brass provided a comprehensive briefing on the law-and-order situation in Jammu and Kashmir, ongoing anti-terror operations, and intelligence reports regarding potential threats.

Special attention was given to the recent terror attack in Kulgam where ex-serviceman Manzoor Ahmad Wagay was shot dead, while his wife and niece were left injured.

Shah expressed concern over renewed terrorist activities and instructed security forces to maintain high alert and ensure swift action against militants and their networks.

The meeting also discussed cross-border infiltration patterns, as well as the latest technological advancements being deployed to counter terrorism, including surveillance drones, night-vision cameras, and AI-driven tracking mechanisms.
The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has remained tense in recent months, despite a reported decline in overall terror-related incidents compared to previous years. However, targeted killings and cross-border infiltration attempts continue to pose a significant challenge.
Security agencies have intensified their counter-insurgency operations, particularly in the hilly and forested terrains along the Line of Control (LoC) and the South Kashmir region, which have seen repeated militant activity.

Just last week, a massive combing operation was launched in key terror-affected districts, including:

Rajouri and Poonch: Witnessed multiple terror attacks last year, with militants attempting to establish sleeper cells.
Reasi, Doda, and Kishtwar: Once considered terrorist-free, these areas have seen a resurgence of militancy, prompting additional deployment of security forces.

Kathua and Jammu regions: Intelligence reports suggest a rise in terrorist infiltration from across the border, using new routes to avoid detection.
During the last review meeting on December 19, 2024, Amit Shah had directed security agencies to work in a coordinated manner to eliminate terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir. The government continues to emphasize its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, while also focusing on developmental initiatives to curb radicalization among youth.

The government has claimed that terror-related incidents, recruitment of local youth into militant outfits, and infiltration from Pakistan have significantly declined over the past year. However, officials acknowledge that recent attacks indicate a shift in terrorist strategy, with groups now targeting security personnel and civilians to create panic.
Security forces have been instructed to increase night patrols, intelligence-based operations, and coordination between the Army, police, and paramilitary units.

New security checkpoints and surveillance infrastructure are being established in vulnerable districts.
Efforts to dismantle Over Ground Worker (OGW) networks are being intensified, as these sleeper cells provide logistical support to terrorists.
Use of modern technology, including drones and AI-based tracking systems, is being expanded to monitor border infiltration attempts.
The Rajouri-Poonch region has been a major area of concern due to frequent terror attacks on security forces and civilians. Intelligence inputs suggest that Pakistan-backed terror outfits are trying to revive militancy in this belt.

Security forces have been conducting sustained anti-terror operations in the forested areas of Rajouri, Poonch, and Doda, which are often used by militants as hiding spots before launching attacks.

The fresh review of security in Jammu and Kashmir has also sparked reactions from political leaders. While some have welcomed the Centre’s proactive approach, others have criticized the government for failing to prevent targeted killings.
Local residents, especially in the Kashmir Valley, have expressed concerns over the safety of civilians and ex-servicemen, urging security forces to intensify crackdowns on terrorist hideouts.

The Union government, under Amit Shah’s leadership, remains committed to ensuring long-term stability in Jammu and Kashmir through a multi-pronged approach involving security, intelligence coordination, and developmental initiatives.

With ongoing counter-terror operations and heightened security measures, authorities hope to prevent further terrorist attacks and restore normalcy in the region.
