Amazon has launched a new Amazon Prime Lite subscription, which is a cheaper and toned-down version of the regular Prime, to expand its subscriber base in India. The membership was earlier available to select users in the country but appears to be available to users. The Prime Lite subscription, unlike the regular Prime membership, has a single annual plan. It means customers have to pay Rs 999 for 12 months as there are no quarterly or monthly plans. Interestingly, the Prime Lite price is similar to regular Prime subscriptions’ erstwhile pricing. The regular Prime membership costs Rs 1,499 in India.3 Regular Prime’s monthly membership costs Rs 299, and the quarterly subscription is priced at Rs 599.
In terms of benefits, Prime Lite and Amazon Prime are similar with some minor tweaks. Prime Lite members can enjoy one-day or two-day delivery and no rush shipping to eligible addresses. Amazon promises no minimum order value required for free standard delivery.
Regular Prime gives access to Amazon Music and Videos. Prime Lite members have the same benefits, though streaming quality on Prime Video is affected. Users can enjoy unlimited video streaming across two devices in HD quality. Whereas, regular Prime members get the option of 4K streaming on up to six devices simultaneously. Amazon says Prime Videos will display ads, hence a cheaper version. However, Amazon has not clarified how the ads are going to be placed. Prime Videos with regular membership also displays ads at the beginning of shows or movies, though there is always an option to skip.
