Amid reduced regulatory pressure and a surge in youth unemployment, Alibaba Group Holding’s e-commerce division in China is looking to hire over 2,000 recent graduates. The unit, which encompasses platforms like Taobao and Tmall, aims to fill various positions including design, product development, and data analysis. The recruitment announcement was made through the official WeChat account on Thursday. These opportunities will be located across at least six Chinese cities, including Hangzhou and Shanghai.

China had halted the publication of data on the escalating youth unemployment rate in July, citing the need to address statistical complexities. Prior to that, the rate had climbed consistently this year, hitting a peak of 21.3% in June.

Summer usually witnesses a surge in youth unemployment, with millions of graduates entering the job market. The Ministry of Education projects that around 12 million students will graduate from universities and colleges in 2023.

In a shift, the Chinese government extended an olive branch to major tech firms, concluding investigations into companies such as Alibaba and Tencent Holdings in July with substantial fines. Premier Li Qiang engaged with senior executives from Alibaba, Bytedance Ltd., JD.com Inc., and other internet companies, pledging increased industry support by fostering a fair environment and reducing compliance costs.
