Akali leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura passes away at 85

Veteran Akali leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura passed away at the age of 85 on Tuesday. He was born on November 8, 1937, in Singapore.

He was admitted to the PGI in Chandigarh due to age-related health problems for the past few days. He died at the PGI, this morning. His body was being taken to his native village at Brahmpura in Amritsar district where it will be cremated on Wednesday.
He was a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Khadoor Sahib constituency from 2014 to 2019 representing the Shiromani Akali Dal party. He was often referred to as Majhe Da Jarnail (meaning General of Majha in Punjabi).
He had previously served as Cabinet Minister in Punjab govt twice and MLA four times.
He was in the Shiromani Akali Dal until he was expelled from the party in 2019 . However, on December 23, 2021, he rejoined Shiromani Akali Dal just before the last assembly elections.
