On Wednesday, an official from the Delhi prison authorities announced the installation of AI-based CCTV cameras in Delhi prisons. The purpose of these cameras is to enhance security and address areas where traditional cameras are currently absent. These blind spots are frequently exploited by incarcerated criminals for illegal activities, including smuggling phones and exchanging prohibited items.
To prevent criminals from escaping, the Public Works Department (PWD) is also installing high grills at various locations, as stated by an anonymous official.
In February, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved the establishment of a 10-member expert committee, led by the Director General of Prisons, to select the most effective signal jammers for preventing the use of mobile phones by inmates in Delhi jails. This decision followed a proposal from the prisons department to form a high-level technical committee tasked with finding and testing solutions to strengthen the signal jammer system in the city’s jails.
Delhi is home to three prison complexes—Tihar, one of the largest in the world, the Rohini prison complex, and the Mandoli prison complex. These facilities currently house approximately 13,000 inmates, according to authorities.
According to a senior Delhi Police officer, an average of 10 mobile phones are smuggled into Tihar jail every day using various methods. Visitors of inmates are often responsible for smuggling in most of the phones. For high-profile inmates, phones are concealed within food plates or clothing packets, as mentioned by another official.
Previously, installing mobile phone jammers within Tihar jail was challenging due to complaints from neighboring residents’ welfare associations regarding poor network coverage and unreliable connectivity. However, officials clarified that the new jammers utilize advanced technology, allowing them to precisely target and restrict network usage within specific areas without impacting the surrounding regions.
