Jammu and Kashmir Police states, 25 “chronic” drug smugglers in Poonch were arrested and imprisoned for a month on April 21 in response to intelligence warnings that they would jeopardize the smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha elections in the border district.
Poonch is part of Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency, which is going to polls in the third phase on May 7.
The police added that the residents, who come from various regions under the jurisdiction of Poonch, Surankote, Mandi, Mendhar, and Gursai police stations, have been found to be involved in drug dealing in their communities and have been linked to numerous instances under the NDPS Act.
“They have become a potential threat to the lives of the younger generation of the district. It was also reported by many people and intelligence agencies that these individuals might pose a threat to the peaceful electioneering process,” police said in a statement.
It said more detentions of the identified drug peddlers cannot be ruled out in the coming days.
