The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its plan to hold a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Tuesday to protest against the situation in strife-torn Manipur and to condemn alleged acts of violence against women in the northeastern state.
Gopal Rai, the party’s Delhi state convenor and environment minister, made the announcement on Twitter, urging like-minded individuals to join the peaceful protest at 4 pm on Tuesday.
“In response to the escalating violence and brutality against women in Manipur, the Aam Aadmi Party will peacefully gather at Jantar Mantar at 4 pm today. We appeal to all our friends to join us at Jantar Mantar at 4 pm,” Rai posted on his official Twitter account.
The AAP’s Delhi unit also shared a poster on their official Twitter account, publicizing the upcoming protest.
As of now, the Delhi traffic police has not issued a traffic advisory for the event.
A video emerged on July 19 showing three women being stripped and paraded in Manipur, which added to the existing tensions in the state. This incident also resulted in the disruption of the first two days of Parliament’s monsoon session last week.
For the past two months, ethnic violence has ravaged Manipur, claiming more than 150 lives and leaving over 50,000 injured. The clashes initially erupted on May 3 in Churachandpur town after Kuki groups protested against a proposal to grant scheduled tribe status to Manipur’s dominant Meitei community.
