The Army on Tuesday stated that the security forces have eliminated an A category terrorist – Umar Lone, in Aragam area of Bandipora during a joint operation launched by security forces on the intervening night of June 16 and 17 of 2024. Addressing media persons on Tuesday in Bandipora, Commander 3 Sector- Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Vipul Tyagi said that the elimination of top rank commander was the major achievement for the security forces.
He said the operation was jointly conducted by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after receiving a specific intelligence inputs about terrorist activities in Aragam area of Bandipora district.
“We have been closely monitoring the area. On the night of June 16-17, we received specific intelligence inputs, based on which the Indian Army, along with the JK Police and CRPF, launched a joint operation. During this operation, one of our ambush parties noticed some suspicious movement,” the Army Commander said.
He said that upon confirmation, the ambush party opened fire on the terrorists, resulting in the elimination of a terrorist named Umar Lone, resident of Husankhoie Pattan in Baramulla district.
“Umar Lone was active since 2018 and he was associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and The Resistance Front (TRF). He played a crucial role in recruiting youth into terrorist groups, managing an Over Ground Worker (OGW) network, and orchestrating numerous illegal killings,” Tyagi told media persons.
He said Umar Lone was a wanted terrorist based on his in the region.
“The elimination of Umar Lone is a significant success for the security forces. In the past few weeks, the Indian Army, JK Police, and CRPF have maintained high operational momentum which resulted in several successful operations and the elimination of many long-time terrorists,” the Army commander said.
He said that the security forces have received immense support from the local population, and this cooperation will continue with the same vigor in future as well.
