China flood: Officials said on Wednesday that 33 people have died as a result of recent flooding in China’s capital, including five rescuers, and another 18 people are still missing. This comes as most of the country’s north continues to be threatened by exceptionally high rain.
The municipal government reports that days of torrential rain particularly hard impacted areas in the city’s mountainous western fringes, resulting in the collapse of 59,000 dwellings, damage to approximately 150,000 others, and flooding of more than 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) of agriculture.
Heavy flooding has also been experienced in other areas of China, in part as a result of Typhoon Doksuri, which hit over the weekend and left dozens of people dead and missing. Some of the greatest floods in the area occurred in Hebei Province, which is just west of Beijing. Some of the 125,000 inhabitants who had been forced to flee their homes were able to return home on Saturday as floodwaters in Zhuozhou, southwest of Beijing, started to subside
According to the official, a rescue effort was also in progress in the tourist destination of Ya’an in the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan, where about a dozen guests had been washed away by raging rivers. Rescuers found the bodies of seven victims, recovered four survivors, and stated they were still seeking for more victims.
Since late July, severe rainstorms have pounded northern China, interrupting millions of people’s livelihoods.
