Sajjad Gani Lone, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, has offered a detailed analysis of the 2024 Assembly elections, describing them as a learning moment for all political players in Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that the BJP’s rhetoric and controversial remarks during the election campaign inadvertently helped the National Conference (NC) secure a decisive win. Lone suggested that the BJP’s missteps may have alienated voters, leading them to rally behind the NC as a counterforce.
Lone did not hold back in criticizing the National Conference, asserting that the party is destined to fail in governance. According to Lone, the National Conference’s manifesto contains unrealistic promises that are impossible to fulfill, especially given the current economic challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir.
“The financial condition of Jammu and Kashmir does not allow for the kind of commitments made by the NC. Their manifesto is more like a collection of slogans rather than a roadmap for governance,” Lone said. He also added that these unfeasible promises would eventually expose the NC’s inability to deliver, further eroding public trust in them.
Sajjad Gani Lone went a step further by hinting at a possible collaboration between the BJP and the National Conference. While stopping short of providing specifics, he remarked, “There seems to be something fishy going on between the BJP and the NC.” This statement has sparked a debate in political circles, with many questioning whether backchannel understandings exist between the two parties.
Lone said that, “Our political journey is focused solely on the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We have no hidden agendas or special favors with Delhi,” he said.
However, Lone also emphasized the importance of dialogue with the central government. “It is essential to engage with Delhi through mutual respect and understanding, not by hostility. We must seek solutions with love and diplomacy,” he added, urging all stakeholders to adopt a constructive approach.
Lone reiterated his long-standing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, urging all political parties in the Union Territory to unite for this cause. “It is the responsibility of every elected member of the Assembly to press the central government for the return of statehood. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have the right to self-governance, and we cannot compromise on that,” he stated.
Sajjad Gani Lone also voiced concerns over the increasing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the job market. He warned that unchecked promotion of AI could lead to widespread unemployment, especially in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where traditional industries are already struggling. “While AI may bring technological advancements, we must also prepare for its repercussions, particularly the loss of jobs in sectors that depend heavily on manual labor,” Lone explained.
Despite his criticism of many government policies, Lone acknowledged the progress made in e-governance. He lauded the administration’s efforts to modernize government services, making them more accessible and efficient for the public. “The strides made in e-governance are commendable and show that positive change is possible with the right vision,” he remarked.
Turning to economic development, Lone emphasized the importance of the horticulture and tourism sectors, which he described as the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. He urged the government to create more employment opportunities in these sectors to address the growing unemployment crisis.
“Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector has the potential to compete globally, but it needs better infrastructure and support. Similarly, tourism, which has always been a key contributor to our economy, requires fresh investments to attract more visitors and create jobs for our youth,” Lone said.
Sajjad Gani Lone concluded his remarks by calling on all political parties to prioritize the welfare of the people over political rivalries. He urged leaders to rise above partisan interests and work collectively for the prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir.
